To boost community engagement in Portland, Oregon’s popular North park blocks, this design proposes to establish a place of learning and creativity for students, professionals and the Portland neighborhood at large. The goal is to activate the community sector through participation and encouragement of individuality through the arts. It’s a place where dancers and musicians coalesce. At the heart of the design is future-thinking material choices. Mass timber structure is enveloped in perforated corten steel panels on the south face of the building, while the west facade bears a kinetic louver system that utilizes technology which reacts to the solar conditions in order to utilize natural daylight while mitigating glare and solar gain for those practicing their art from inside the classrooms.
