[in]ARCH Folly
University of Berkeley Campus
"Proud exemplars of industrial progress; ....the packaged goods of exploration and the damaged goods of exploitation."
-Anthony Vidler
After a series of serial projections of elemental forms that establish a framework for the establishment of a formal vocabulary, part-to-whole relationships are explored through the design of an architectural folly. Orthographic projection was utilized in creating a multitude of formal iterations cut by the constraints of an 18' x 18' cube. The more interesting iterations were assessed and reworked until the final form of the folly was found. Easily accessible circulation leads upstairs to a single-stall restroom and a covered space. The folly has been designed to be situated on a mild, downward-rolling slope which centers a picturesque field of grass near the western edge of the UC Berkeley campus. Site observation revealed a tranquil atmosphere for locals to read, do yoga, or throw a frisbee. The interactive folly offers an point of focus, surprising from every point of view.
