Furniture Making School of Eugene
Whitaeker District of Eugene, Oregon
Located in the heart of the Whitaeker District in Eugene, Oregon, this furniture making school proposal illustrates a meticulously designed layout and building section which fosters a programmatic flow between spaces. The physical structures of the campus’s buildings are planned to be crafted with locally sourced engineered lumber (as the pacific northwest is a mecca for Douglas fir trees and sustainable forestry). The site plan connects students with a community of craftsmanship, allowing them to learn firsthand the plethora of techniques in which one can make high quality furnishings. A public gallery defines the street and welcomes all folks to the practice. By redefining the spatial relationships between classroom, workshop, and the Whitaeker district’s artistic environment, the school inspires innovation and a deep sense of community amongst future furniture makers and design fanatics alike. 681 Design Studio led by Professor Stephen Duff at the U of O, Fall 2020. IBC building type is defined as Mixed-Use Type IV.
