Mercado a Vigo
Vigo, Galicia, Spain
Mercado a Vigo located along the scenic coast of Vigo in Galicia, Spain, is designed to blend the region's rich architectural heritage with modern sustainable practices. The ground floor is dedicated to a vibrant fish market, serving as a gathering point for locals, while the second floor features a restaurant offering panoramic views of the bay. The fish market, a key community space, will activate the urban landscape right at street level. Above it, the restaurant provides an elevated space that connects people to the beauty of the coastal landscape. Sustainability and visual warmth are at the heart of the building's mass timber structure, emphasizing eco-consciousness in both material selection and design approach. The façade is clad with terra cotta panels and intricate jaali screens, paying homage to the traditional clay building materials of Galicia while adapting them for contemporary use. The building form is carefully crafted to maximize natural daylight on all sides while maintaining a clear, centralized vertical circulation core. A standout feature of the design is the central platform stair, which efficiently links all upper levels with a single exterior stair. This clever solution not only complies with building codes, but also promotes natural ventilation and logical connectivity throughout the structure, strengthening the building’s core and offering interstitial areas in which people can sit. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding maritime environment, the design incorporates a fish-scale motif, which is reflected in the porous terra cotta screens and select interior finishes. This connection to the local context deepens the sense of place, creating a harmonious blend of function, form, and cultural relevance.
